About Portabello's

After spending more than 20 years as a chef in New Jersey, Brett Hulbert and his partner, Sandra Morris, became the owners of Portabello’s, a cozy BYOB Italian-American restaurant in Kennett Square. Chef Brett uses the fullness of his art and craft to create food that speaks deeply of the sensibility and heritage of his new home turf.

  • My husband and I have had both lunch and dinner at Portabello’s and each time the food and service have been superb. Their Tuscan White Bean Soup is rich and full of flavor with a hint of spicy sausage. The Butternut Squash Ravioli is tender and flavorful, with the cream sauce balancing the sweetness of the squash nicely. The Rigatoni with Pomadoro Sauce is fresh and well-balanced. The Avalon Seafood Chowder relies on a variety of tender, fresh shellfish in a fragrant thickened broth rather than the thick, pasty over-use of cream that you find in so many restaurant chowders. The only criticism is the iced tea, which unfortunately comes from a soda gun.

  • This was the absolutely worst dining experience my husband and I have ever had. We had reservations, but had to wait at the door several minutes before a hostess approached us. Then we had to wait while they got a table ready for us. Then we waited 10 minutes before a waitress approached our table. We were not informed of the specials nor did we receive any bread (which we knew were available, because we heard and saw other tables getting them). My husband wanted steak which was on the menu, but was not available. We waited 1 hour to receive a very average meal. We were not offered any desert; only excuses about the shoddy service.
